  Auch bei diesem Anlauf kam es nicht zur Wahl eines Präsidenten. Seit dem 30. November 2007 - dem Ende der Amtszeit von Emile Lahoud - hat das Land damit keinen gewählten Präsidenten, obwohl ein Kandidat mit mehrheitlicher Unterstützung bereitsteht. Wann es zur Wahl kommt, steht bislang nicht fest.
  
• 11.2.2008: Trinidad & Tobago | Presidential Election
  PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad: In what was described as a mere formality, the Parliament Electoral College in Port of Spain sat on Monday to re-elect for a second term, President George Maxwell Richards as Trinidad and Tobago's head of state. President Richards was the only nominee. The ceremony took place at the Red House and lasted some five minutes. The last time the Electoral College met was on February 14, 2003. Richards was not required to be present at the ceremony. However, his declaration was read out to members by Chairman of the proceeding, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Barry Sinanan. Richards' position was then confirmed by the Speaker following support from 15 Parliamentarians from the House of Representatives in a move of confidence. Though elected, he will take the oath of office on March 16, which marks the end of his current term. Meanwhile, the country's Opposition Leader, Basdeo Panday, speaking with Caribbean Net News immediately following the election, said the country witnessed what he described as more weaknesses in the Constitution that he said again needs to change. Panday added that the opposition will be embarking on a campaign as a reaction to what has happened. He said the opposition had no way in even having its side heard on the election of a president, seeing that the government had a 26 to 15 seat built in majority.

• 12.2.2008: USA | Primaries in Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia
  WASHINGTON: Senator Barack Obama hat im Rennen um die US-Präsidentschaftskandidatur der Demokraten erstmals die Führung vor seiner Rivalin Hillary Clinton übernommen. Nach drei Vorwahlsiegen in Virginia, Maryland und in der Hauptstadt Washington überholte Obama die frühere First Lady bei der Zahl der Delegierten für den Nominierungsparteitag im August. Die Siege Obamas fielen deutlich aus. So kam er in Washington auf rund 75 Prozent der Stimmen. In Virginia votierten etwa zwei Drittel der demokratischen Wähler für ihn. Bei den Republikanern baute Senator John McCain ebenfalls mit Siegen in allen drei Vorwahlen seine Führungsposition aus. Damit dürfte McCain die Präsidentschaftskandidatur kaum noch zu nehmen sein.

• 16.2.2008: Cyprus | Presidential Elections
  NIKOSIA: Der griechische Teil der Mittelmeerinsel Zypern hat sich bei der Präsidentenwahl für einen politischen Wechsel entschieden und den als Hardliner geltenden Amtsinhaber Tassos Papadopoulos mit nur rund 32 Prozent der Stimmen abgewählt. Vor ihm liegen der konservative frühere Außenminister Ioannis Kassoulidis und der linke Parlamentspräsident Dimitris Christofias mit jeweils knapp 34 Prozent. Beide gehen jetzt am kommenden Sonntag in eine Stichwahl. Papadopoulos hatte sich 2004 einem Plan der Vereinten Nationen für eine Wiedervereinigung des griechischen und des türkisch besetzten Teils der Insel widersetzt.
