In a contentious parliamentary election on Tuesday, Barbadians went to the polls and voted for the opposition Democratic Labor Party (DLP) led by David THOMPSON. Preliminary election results show the DLP winning 20 of the 30 seats in the House of Assembly. The incumbent Barbados Labor Party (BLP), led by outgoing Prime Minister Owen ARTHUR, won only eight seats while three others are still in dispute. Prior to the election, the BLP held 24 of 30 seats and were seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in office since they took power in 1994. During the campaign, ARTHUR accused his rivals of taking campaign contributions from the government of Taiwan in exchange for switching allegiance away from China, an allegation the DLP denied. Shortly after the election ARTHUR conceded defeat and THOMPSON was sworn in as Prime Minister on Wednesday.
  • 20.1.2008: Serbia- Presidential Election
The presidential election in Serbia heads for a runoff after no candidate received a majority of the votes in Sunday’s election, despite a large voter turnout. With 61% of the 6.7 million eligible voters participating, first round results showed Tomislav NIKOLIC of the Serbian Radical Party with 39% of the vote and President Boris TADIC with 35%. Third parties shared the remainder of the vote as reported by the Central Election Commission. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe concluded the elections were conducted fairly. The runoff between NIKOLIC and TADIC is slated for February 3 and the next parliamentary elections are scheduled for January 2011.
